BEACHES

  • Playa del Carmen is attractive for its turquoise-colored water and tropical atmosphere. It has five star hotels, rustic cabins, craft stores, boutiques and restaurants.

  • Akumal is located approximately 70 miles to the south of the airport of Cancun. "El Caballo Bayo" has a natural reef at its entrance and a snorkeling area, which is world famous.

  • Chetumal is the capital of the state. It is located in the southern part of Quintana Roo, and it is only a few minutes from the border with Belice. The peninsula of "Xcalak" is located on the southeast of the bay of Chetumal. It possesses virgin beaches where cabins and "palapas" are available. On the coast is located "Chinchorro" shoal, cemetery of many sunken crafts and a paradise for divers.

  • Isla Mujeres is available for snorkeling. It has beautiful underwater views to contemplate. It also has a rustic fisherman's village with small back streets that invite you to take peaceful walks.

  • Cozumel s the biggest island of the coast of Mexico. It is located amid the turquoise waters of the Caribbean and surrounded by one of the most beautiful reefs on the planet. Well know as an "Island of the swallows", Cozumel offers incomparable waters for diving and for world-class sport fishing. Vestiges of Mayan civilization are also easily accessible by horseback, by car and within walking distances.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL RUINS

  • Tulum offers one of the most impressive archaeological sites of the Mayan World. It is built on a cliff that is over the Caribbean Sea. There are more than 60 structures inside the wall that surrounds Tulum, the most important being the Castle. It is protected by a great wall on one side and the sea on the other. This city was a center of trade from which the products of other Caribbean towns were transported to many distant parts of Mexico .

  • Chichén Itza was once a Mayan city where the Indians built temples and monuments including the well-know pyramid "The Castle", "The Snail" observatory, the site for ball games, and the structure known as "The Thousand Columns". In the spring, one can observe the form of a mythological viper, cast by a shadow on the steps of the pyramid that represents the god "Kukulcan".

  • Cobá: Hidden in the undergrowth, has "sacbes" (white roads) and other constructions that you'll enjoy exploring. There were more than 50 of these roads, and the longest was apparently important not only commercially but politically. Unlike other Mayan cities of the Yucatan Peninsula, Coba remained inhabited after the conquest by the Spaniards.

  • In Uxmal there is one of the most important constructions called "El Divino" pyramid. The panoramic view from the summit of the pyramid is very beautiful. In order to reach it, it is necessary to go up a 35 meter staircase. The ornamentation along the way displays a figure-head of the god of the rain and other interesting artifacts.

NATURAL ATTRACTIONS

  • In Xcaret you will find a small archaeological area that was part of the Mayan port of Pole, a beautiful creek (ideal for snorkeling), dolphins, an aviary and a museum. You can also enjoy activities at night. Another attraction is an underground river with crystalline waters.

  • Xel-Ha is the biggest natural aquatic park in the world. On a land of calcareous ground, nature has formed incredible caves, creeks and lagoons in the area of the park.
